Recipe

What goes in

  • 3 limes, quartered
  • A little brown sugar
  • 3 habanero peppers, sliced — don't forget the seeds!
  • Optional: 1 jalapeño + 1 serrano pepper
  • 6 shots good-quality silver tequila
  • A couple splashes of lime juice

How it's done

  1. In a cocktail shaker, muddle the quartered limes with a little brown sugar.
  2. Add the sliced habaneros. For the full experience, add the optional jalapeño and serrano.
  3. Pour in 6 shots of good silver tequila and a couple splashes of lime juice.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  5. Strain into shot glasses and serve cold.
  6. Round two: For every new shaker, keep the old limes and peppers in the shaker. Just add more tequila and lime juice. Feeling crazy? Add more peppers. Put it back in the fridge for 20 minutes, then strain and serve again.
Respect the peppers. Habaneros can cause intense burning. Avoid touching your eyes or face after handling them, wash hands and tools thoroughly, and start cautiously if you are sensitive to spicy foods. Drink responsibly.
Legend has it

The Story

Not for the faint of heart. The Macho Shot has been described by friends as “the crack cocaine of shots”: the first one hits and your throat is on fire. Some have even thrown up.

Then the fire finally starts to calm down… and somehow, against all better judgment, you want ANOTHER.
